Billy Eckstein

William Clarence ‘Billy‘ Eckstein was an American singer and bandleader, whose smooth baritone broke down barriers during the 1940s,first as leader of his own bop big band and then as a romantic popular singer. Billy’s big band served as a haven for young musicians including Dizzy Gillespie, Dexter Gordon, Miles Davis, Art Blakey and Charlie Parker.
Later known for his romantic ballads, he recorded more than a dozen hits in the forties including “My Foolish Heart” and “Bing Crosby’s hit, “I Apologize”. Quincy Jones once said that he looked up to Billy Eckstein as an idol. “I wanted to dress like him, talk like him; pattern my whole life as a musician and as a complete person in the image of dignity that he projected...”
Tanya Free and Friends Radio honors the contributions and legacy of  Mr. “B” Billy Eckstein.
