One for All

Arizona’s flat tax proposal has triggered debate of whether a single tax rate would stimulate economic growth or whether it would hurt the poor and working poor, who now in many cases pay little or no taxes.

How do you feel about a single flat tax rate for all working Americans?

The corporations will still find a way to not pay any taxes and the poor will have to pay more.

This may sound good, but the devil is in the details. The poor will be poorer and the rich will be richer. We need to adjust the graduated system that we have and reduce the loopholes for the upper echelon.

I would love to see a flat Tax rate not only for the states but for federal taxes as well. Many states already do this, Florida and North Carolina to say two off the top of my head. You pay taxes on what you buy but you don’t pay taxes as part of your income. Imagine that come tax season…LOL As far as corporations getting out of paying taxes, no matter what corporations are never going to pay taxes themselves, they simply role what they pay into taxes against the operating costs and add it to the price of their product then what happens is that you and I the consumer are actually paying the taxes not the corporations. As for poor having to pay taxes I believe if you are going to vote then you need to have skin in the game, really don’t think we should have the zero liability voter.

@Steve, how does a flat tax system make the poor poorer and the rich richer?

@Patrick I was referring to the Arizona proposal, not a supercharged sales tax.(which is no different than our gas tax here in VA) This is the text from Tanya's post :"What's been overshadowing the discussion, however, are reports that this specific proposal would increase taxes for the working poor. It is certainly true some people currently pay little or no taxes under the current system and they would pay at least something with a flat tax. It's also true that income isn't the only form of compensation these sorts of workers receive in a year. They also receive a number of government benefits such as subsidized child care, free health care, and myriad other services. The requirement that all Americans pay at least something in taxes may not seem as onerous when viewed in the broader context of the government services to which they have access."

How can we even think about a fair flat tax when we are hell bent on devising new ways to lower the taxes of the richest 1%?

I prefer the national sales tax pay as you go method.

Not sure if a flat tax is a good idea, but a national; sales tax makes sense. The more you buy,the more you pay.People receiving government assistance wouls be exempted by displaying their EBT card.

I support the flat fair tax for all.

Thank you Tanya for the discussion. In this media age of Donald Trump and Charlie Sheen,I compliment you for your relevance.I support a revamping of our tax system that creates fairness.I like the National sales tax.

A flat national sales tax will affect those working and not working, just like the state sales tax.

A flat tax is not the answer, apparently its not what the rich folk want either.
