Born in the USA

We are approaching July Fourth 2010, a day of planned fireworks, parades and concerts to honor and celebrate our freedom and liberty. I find it ironic that while we are enjoying our hot dogs at the ballpark wrapped in red, white and blue, lawmakers in the State of Arizona will be putting the finishing touches on proposed legislation to deny birth certificates to children who are born in the USA to illegal parents.

Section 1 of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, which by the way overruled the decision that denied citizenship to African Americans, clearly states “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States.”

Conspicuously absent are cries of foul play from the new crop of constitutionalists who regularly accuse the Obama administration of planning to strip them of all of their constitutional “rights”. It is now time that WE cry Foul! Why is it that states’ rights trump the Constitution when it is aligned with right wing ideals? Which group of Americans will be next on the exception list?
