Ground Zero

A proposal to build a Mosque and Muslim cultural center near Ground Zero has sparked opposition from a September 11th victims’ group and the Tea Party.

What do you think? Is the opposition justified?

Absolutely not.Islam did not attack NY.Terrorists did. This is not a monument to those terrorists that attacked the US.

There is no justification for religious intolerance.

No. Thank you for highlighting the hypocrisy.Would a cathedral or synagouge would be welcome ?

Why is it that something that is obviously so insensitive is being portrayed as a religious rights issue. This mosque could be placed anywhere, but not here.I would oppose a Burger King there. I am hopeful that wouldn't offend any cows.

Why would you or CNN consider this newsworthy?Because of the need for PC,this was approved even though this is not a good idea.

No it is not justified!

Like it or not. This country was built on Judeo Christian principles. While I believe in tolerance, building a monument to an enemy of the state is beyond the realm of acceptability.Where are you Baye? I am sure you want a piece of this.

I am not sure what planet Biz is from. How can a religion be an enemy of the state.I believe Timothy McVeigh was a Christian. Are all christians now enemies of the State?

I have a personal connection to both World Trade Center attacks on several levels. I saw Muslims and Christians flee the towers during the first attack, and I know of Muslims, Catholics and Christians who died on 9/11.

The families of Shabbir Ahmad and Mohammad Chowdhury (two Windows on the World employees who died on 9/11) would disagree with anyone who would consider those two men to be enemies of the state by virtue of their religious beliefs.

Not to mention that no state department document I ever read calls Islam an enemy of the state...

Let's consider a different opinion!
During World War II, the militaristic cult of Shintoism, the state religion of Imperial Japan, was always understood to be enemy ideology.

I cannot for the life of me understand this level of intolerance and bigotry. I applaude Baye Kambui for presenting it on a personal level.

Biz,

Strom Thurmond argued on the floor of the Senate decades ago that America must keep segregation in place because eradicating segregation would prove to be a vindication for the Communists, who criticized America's Jim Crow policy at the time.

Two important lessons to learn from here. First, I don't have to be a Communist to hate segregation (LOL). Second, asinine arguments that were made a half-century ago don't always become smarter over time. Bigotry is stupid, and Christian teachings say so.

I'm not a Muslim but I've read the Koran and speak with Muslims frequently. I've been invited to their homes for dinner. My observations inform me that Islam is not an inherently evil religion. Islam advocates inner peace just like other religions.

Outlawing Mosques because of Islamic extremists means we should outlaw Christian worship centers because of the Ku Klux Klan's campaign of terror over the years. After all, the KKK is a religious organization.

I know on an intellectual level that the opposition is not justified, but emotionally find it hard to separate the jihadists from the religion.
