It is amazing how some continue to go back and glamorize one of the darkest periods of time. These were terrorists.Enemies of our country and the constitution!ALL UNDER THE GUISE OF HISTORY! Shameful!

You liberals look under every rock for racism. No one is disputing slavery. This is only a recognition of our history. We don't fight Black History Month.

No,I am ashamed of my state.

The whole idea needs to be ommitted. The governor's statement does nothing to make this even remotely appropriate.

Kate,
Can you explain how the notion of Black History Month can be placed in the same category as the secession of states from the Union? I can't, so I'm asking you for clarification.
The only reason why the Confederate rebels were not tried for treason on a wholesale basis is because the federal government wanted to heal the Union as quickly as possible. If we can commemorate the Confederacy, does that mean the Governor of California can proclaim the month of May as Black Panthers' Month?
Liberal, Conservative, Reactionary, Revolutionary, call it what you want. Slavery is wrong, period. Placing a label on folks will not change history...

I agree with Kate, many have ancestors that fought. Regardless of the outcome the legacy should be preserved. The South lost,I agree, but should that mean the the history books be wiped clean. Why is Richmond lined with heroes of the Confederacy?Because many gave their lives ,not for slavery, but for their beloved Virginia.

Why is it surprising when for many years MLK day was shared with Lee Jackson Day?Now its a four day state holiday.

Is acknowledging that slavery was wrong justify honoring the the slave masters that were fighting to maintain slavery?
