Man of Honor

The world celebrated the twentieth anniversary of the release of Nelson Mandela from a Cape Town, South African prison last week. Mandela, the first President of South Africa to be elected in a fully representative democratic election, served 27 years of isolation and hard labor convicted of charges related to his efforts against apartheid.

From prison to the presidency, influenced by Mahatma Ghandi, Mandela has been the example of reconciliation and negotiation, leading the transition to a multi racial democracy in South Africa. He has been the recipient of over 250 awards over four decades including the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize. Our elected officials would be well advised to emulate the leadership and commitment to freedom and fairness of Nelson Mandela.

There are several key factors in my opinion, which resonate with what the scriptures recognize as a “strong man.” It speaks about the division of a kingdom within it self. This is common within human beings. If we are divided within our inner most being, then there is no room for completeness. It becomes a personally battle within the spirit, which is embodied in the person. Being in a relationship and in tune with creation allows a being to stand bold and confident in his/her beliefs. It allows the spirit to either be broken or strengthen.

I associate the ordeal The Honorable Nelson Mandela went through similar to that of the Apostle Paul. When you speak the truth, the adversary will try and silence you but when you walk in the council of Godliness, your light will shine for the world to see. Paul also speaks about “pressing towards the mark”. February is recognized as Black History Month and we should hold up the Mother, Fathers, Brothers, Sisters, Grandparents, Civic Leaders, Historian names and un-named who have pressed towards the mark for humanity.

I agree with Robert's sentiments. We often associate leadership with public bravado. This man's quiet diplomacy is to be applauded.
