Black History
February is Black History Month and it is fitting that we honor the father of black history, Dr. Carter G. Woodson. Historian, author, journalist and Virginia native, born ten years post slavery, Dr. Woodson’s life marks great strides in our history. Beating the odds of oppression and poverty, Dr. Woodson carried the torch of higher education, being the second African American to earn a Ph.D. from Harvard University.
Passionate about the preservation of African American History, Dr. Woodson, the founder of the Journal of Negro History, Negro History Week (precursor to Black History Month) and the Negro History Bulletin, dedicated his life to the study and celebration of black history.
Dr. Woodson contended that African American contributions “were overlooked, ignored and even suppressed by the writers of history textbooks and the teachers who use them.”
Let us ensure that the rich legacy of African American history is never lost, minimized or marginalized.

Thank you .The problem is that many think Black History Month is only for African Americans. This is American History. We all have been left in the dark because of apathy and ignorance.Heard this this morning and had to respond.

I am all for recognizing the accomplishments of African Americans, but how can ever move to a more colorblind equal society while continuing to splinter by ethnicity.Just a thought.

Don't you think the lack of enthusiasm means the time for Black History Month has passed. We are so busy looking back that we cannot see the forest for the trees!

We have come a long way since Dr. Woodson.Maybe our approach should be different.Rolling out documentaries and black movies for a month serve no purpose to me

Garrett, how can we expect others to appreciate our history when many of us don't give a damn!

Some of these comments demonstrate why we can't ignore our history. We have marginalized ourselves.

It is not that I am against Black History. I am against the same tired regurgitation of stories of slavery,Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass
