Supporters of former Del. Joe Morrissey's Richmond mayoral campaign appear to have embraced a twist on the election-year tradition of competing Democratic sample ballots: Passing out fake Republican sample ballots in heavily Democratic precincts that link his opponent Jack Berry to Donald Trump.

Outside the Randolph Community Center, a polling place in the battleground 5th District, Bill Laffoon encouraged voters to support Trump and Berry. He handed a bright pink "North Richmond Republican PAC Sample Ballot" that prominently listed Berry, who identifies as a Democrat, to anyone who would take it.

Laffoon is a member of the Richmond Crusade for Voters, which endorsed Morrissey, and he has personally donated $1,000 to Morrissey's campaign. Crusade President Corey Nicholson said Laffoon was acting as an individual, not as a representative of the group.
