What's Your Take on Confederate Symbols?

New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu has set social media on fire after stating that it is time to talk about the replacement of the statue of Robert E. Lee. "Symbols really do matter," he said. "Symbols should reflect who we really are as a people.”He went on to say “Even though Robert E. Lee reflects a part of our history, he does not reflect what the city is or who the city wants to be”, Mayor Landrieu said.

What’s Your take on Confederate symbols? How much do these symbols mean to you?Should statues honoring the Confederacy be taken down across America?

The South lost and do not deserve this type of recognition

These symbols are a reminder of the South's dark past. No pun intended

The symbols of hate can be removed but the presence of bigotry cannot be removed by removing a statue

I have seen more confederate flags on the back of trucks lately than ever before.Let work on removing discrimination ,not the symbols of discrimination

The whole flag and statue debate is a distraction as our voting rights are being diminished and cops killing our kids on the street

You can take down every flag and every statue and Black people will still be second class citizens even with a Black president

No, I have no problem with them. They encourage me to keep fighting

You have your Black History Month, why can't we honor our history?

Major retailers are worried about image, and making profits from the flags isn't worth the consequence of being perceived as racist.

The Confederate flags represent many things...cognitive dissonance, racial hatred, a duped public and a massive distraction from America's other problems...

song currently stuck in my head: "louvação" - gilberto gil

Flag has to go as well as any state, local or federal buildings, facilities or parks with the names of Confederate traders on them

This is much to do about nothing. We can't choose our ancestors and don't have to agree to honor their contributions.

That flag and monuments represents racist terrorism and white supremacy, something we should all be talking about but of course refined white supremacists don't want black people uniting for any cause and certainly not to talk about or confront white supremacy in any form.

What are we telling children, that is ok to enslave people, ok to commit genocide? Ok to steal land? It is ok to be rapist and child molesters like many of these white men being honored? How Can Hitler be despised but when white men in the USA have done far, far worst!

Anyone that thinks we need to pay for the upkeep of these monuments to remind us of racism is ignorant cause racists will certainly remind us of how racist they are, we do not need monuments for that when we have their descendants right here in the flesh.
