Free Speech or Hate Speech?

The Sons of Confederate Veterans in Texas are proposing a license plate with the rebel battle flag. After several votes, the motor vehicles board rejected the proposed plate, finding that "a significant portion of the public associate[s] the Confederate flag with organizations" that demean or express hatred for minorities. The Sons of Confederate Veterans sued, contending that the state of Texas was violating their free speech rights.

The Confederate flag is a relic to some, a source of Southern pride to others and a symbol of hate for man

The belief that the Confederate flag stands for "heritage not hate" is another exsample of trying to put lipstick on a pig. It's still a pig and the flag is still "HATE"

That flag belongs in a museum and history books and someone should remind these rednecks that the South lost

4. Louis said...

The flag should be banned. It is and has always been a symbol of hate

What happened to free speech?Don't we have the right to put ANY flag on OUR car?

6. Badger said...

Free Speech albeit distasteful should be protected by the First Ammendment

Would this be in question if some group wanted a swastika on their license plate?

The First Amendment doesn’t allow the state to censor the political speech of private persons on the basis of the political content of that speech. It is protected free speech

I don't know why this flag couldn't just be banned . I agree with the op/ed that Salim did. We are bombarded by symbols of a lost cause here in Richmond, the Capitol of the Confederacy. I refuse to drive along Monument Ave.The symbols are an affront to not only the African Americans in our community but the entire community.

These people are really trying to take us back.Wrapped in the flag.We have to stand up. Will Mr.Kalfani be on the show.Excellent piece and how we in Richmond are really numb and apathetic.

Free speech does not excuse hateful speech. That flag is a hateful symbol of slavery and a lost cause.

This has nothing to do with free speech.

The first amendment does not protect state sponsored license plates.I do not want my tax dollars used to promote bigotry and hatred

16. Vincent said...

You people are always upset about something in the past. Isn't it time to get over slavery. You got your Black President

17. Trudy said...

Maybe Vincent would be better served leaving the US.He probably hasn't learned that the North won.

Vincent is an example of a failed public school system. No I can't blame the school system. He was probably home schooled by his dumb azz mother.
