TanyaFree.com Weekly Poll

Many African Americans have stated that they choose not to see films like “12 Years  a Slave” because they don’t want to see more films depicting the downtrodden parts of black history according to a recent article. Reasons include wanting distance from victimization and distance from a history not of their own making? What’s your take? Is blocking out the victimization of ancestors a pathway or is it a barrier to healing?

Do you plan to see the movie 12 Years A Slave?

I understand both sides of the argument. At some point we need get past the anger often experienced when watching this type of film. But avoiding it only deepens the wounds in my opinion.I don't go to the movies often, but will watch it once it comes to Blue Ray.

How can anyone avoid victimization when there are those that would enslave us again if they had their way.

“Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” I will see it.

I don't need any more reminders of how things used to be. I choose to define my destiny by looking forward, not in the rear view mirror.

I respect Rodney's opinion, but think that that type of assine backwards thinking has led to apathy with our young people and a resurgence of the Klan.(aka The Tea Party)

This story should serve as a wake up call.We are not in a post racial society, even though the media tells us that we are.I will see the movie.

I saw the movie and was angered and moved.I have heard from friends that the movie was too long. Well how about 12 years of being whipped and forced to whip your fellow slaves and deny your identity?I will add this to my library when released.
