Here’s a question most people don’t want to think about. An evolving trend in the funeral industry is to pre plan and personalize end of life services similar to our preparation for weddings. The expense of traditional burials is reportedly behind the increase of cremation and options like donating your body to science. By 2018, the U.S. cremation rate is projected to reach 50.6 percent.

What’s your take? Have you pre planned your funeral? What would be your preference? Traditional, Cremation or other?

A third grade teacher read a fable entitled “Kings & Kings” to his students after hearing some students bullying a classmate. The fable features a same sex romance of princes who become  kings after marriage. There were complaints by some parents who wanted the book banned and felt that the teacher was indoctrinating young minds and promoting homosexuality. The school board determined that the book should not be banned, but that teachers must now inform parents of every book they plan to read to the class.

What’s your take? Should the elementary school curriculum include same sex relationships and marriage?

President Obama announced that the White House is raising the threshold income level at which workers are exempt from overtime pay of time-and-a-half wages. Salaried employees earning less than $50,440 a year would be assured overtime if they work more than 40 hours per week, up from the current $23,660 a year. Critics say the plan "will negatively impact small businesses and drastically limit employment opportunities.

Freedom?

July 4th is celebrated as our nation’s Independence Day, but for many African Americans, Juneteenth is the holiday that celebrates freedom and emancipation from slavery. President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on September 22, 1862, with an effective date of January 1, 1863, however the official end of the Civil War was not until April 1865,in light of the slow methods of communication and minimal number of Union troops to enforce Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, Texas slaves continued to live in bondage until June 18th, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger and 2,000 troops arrived in Texas to enforce the emancipation of slaves. On June 19th, legend says that General Granger read the Emancipation Proclamation to everyone while standing on a villa. That day has since become known as Juneteenth, a combination of the word June and nineteenth. Former slaves in Galveston, Texas rejoiced in the streets with jubilant celebrations that became the start of the oldest known celebration commemorating the end of slavery.

Our struggles today are still related to freedom. While we have made extraordinary gains, too often many in our community are left lagging behind the majority population in not only resources but the information necessary to gain those resources. Research shows that a typical White  household has 16 times the wealth of a Black household. The report demonstrates that wealth inequality is actually increasing, not decreasing over time.

As we head to the backyard for hot dogs and burgers on this 4th of July, take a moment to reflect on the real meaning of freedom in 2015.

How do you define freedom ?

150 years after the end of the civil war, the Confederate Flag is now coming down across the south and from the shelves and websites  of major retailers like Walmart. Could some Confederate statues be next? President Obama had three major Supreme Court Victories last week, The Fair Housing Act, The Affordable Care Act and Marriage Equality.

When was the last time you had a pay increase? Chances are your employer won’t give you one if you don’t ask. Believe it or not, nearly 90% of Americans think they are entitled to one but only 54% are courageous enough to ask for one according to a survey. The survey also suggested that fear of rejection leaves many intimidated to ask for a pay bump and others fear the possible backlash of asking for a raise, including punitive measures by the boss.

How about you? Do you think you are entitled to a raise? If so, are you courageous enough to ask for it?
