This is the time of year that we look back at some of the topics that we have discussed on the Tanya Free and Friends Talk Show this year. We have covered a wide range of people and topics including Donald Sterling and the NBA, how the NFL dealt with its first openly gay player as well as domestic abuse and child abuse within its ranks. We tackled same sex marriage and legalized pot and debated immigration reform, voter suppression and the role of the Church in our community .Our listeners and panelists critiqued the Obama administration’s response to LGBT and Latino Communities and the perceived lack of response to the needs of the African American community.
The names of Jordan Davis, Marissa Alexander, Michael Giles, Mike Brown, Eric Garner, John Crawford, Ezell Ford, Cary Ball Jr.,Tamir Rice and countless others will forever be remembered as examples of how much work is yet to do to achieve true justice and equality. We were encouraged by the nationwide protests against police brutality and unequal justice while questioning whether these protests are a sustainable course of action.I am reminded of our heated debate over Justice Clarence Thomas’ statements earlier in the year that suggested that some of us are are too sensitive about race. Are we? That conversation will definitely continue in the coming year.
What do you think were the top 3 news stories of the year and who you would nominate as the Tanya Free and Friends Person of the Year.
