What's Your Take?

President Obama recently acknowledged that high-tech surveillance poses a threat to civil liberties. He called  for an end of the National Security Agency's ability to store phone data from millions of Americans. The President asked Congress, the Justice Department and the intelligence community to help decide who should hold these records. Skeptics feel that these proposals only scratch the surface of civil liberty concerns.

What’s Your Take? Do you feel safer with the proposals and how do you feel about the notion that we should expect and agree to some infringement of civil liberties in exchange for national security?

What's Your Take?

Half of all Black males in the United States have been behind bars by age 23, according to a new study. Analyzing data from 1997 through 2008, the study found that 30 percent of Black men have experienced at least one arrest by age 18, while 22 percent of White males that age have been arrested. The number rose to 49 percent of Black men by age 23, with White males coming in at 38 percent. While the specifics involving this particular study is being challenged by some academics, clearly, there is undisputedly a problem when it comes to the arrests and prosecution of young Black males considering the fact that African Americans reportedly only  account for only  13 percent of the population.

What’s your take? What should America’s and especially Black America’s response be to this scourge on our community?

A recent poll revealed a record high 42% of Americans identify as political independents. Republican identification fell to 25%, the lowest over that time span. At 31%, Democratic identification is unchanged from the last four years but down from 36% in 2008. Americans continue to be more likely to identify themselves as conservatives, but the conservative advantage is down as liberal identification edged up to its highest level since 1992.

Is There A Downside?

The  Ray Charles  song “let’s go get stoned” is now a legal reality in the state of Colorado as of January 1, 2014. Like alcohol, residents 21 years old or older can purchase up to an ounce from a licensed retailer. Colorado became the first state in the nation, and the first government in the world, to control and regulate a legal recreational marijuana industry. Colorado voters also approved a 25 percent tax on all recreational-marijuana sales that are expected to generate roughly $70 million in additional revenue for the state in 2014.Eager customers have kept the marijuana brokers busy and lawmakers are excited about the additional revenue. National polls overwhelmingly support legalization.  Reports reveal that more than 650,000 people were arrested in 2011 just for marijuana possession.

But is there a downside? What’s Your Take? What are the pros and cons of the legalization of marijuana?
