Women in Combat?

Outgoing Defense Secretary Leon Panetta lifted the military ban on women in combat last week. The shift in policy comes on the heels of calls for a fully inclusive military and the President’s inaugural address promising expanded opportunities to women. This decision could open more than 230,000 jobs, many in Army and Marine infantry units, to women. Some have raised questions of strength and performance and suggestions that the American public would not tolerate large numbers of women being killed in war.

What’s your take? How do you feel about women on the front lines in combat?

Now Is The Time to Take Action Against Gun Violence

Watch the President's Weekly Address and post your comments and opinions here on TanyaFree.com.

President Obama reiterates his commitment to do everything in his power to implement a series of commonsense measures that would reduce gun violence in America. The President started off that effort with 23 concrete actions his Administration is taking immediately under its existing legal authority. But to have a lasting impact, Congress must join the administration by passing commonsense laws like requiring a universal background check for anyone trying to buy a gun, and restoring a ban on military-style assault weapons and a 10-round limit for magazines. If they do that, we can respect the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens while helping to keep the irresponsible few from causing massive harm.

Black On Black Crime?

More often than not, Black on Black violence has been reduced to a headline on the six o’clock news featuring interviews with devastated family members and friends of the victim along with the obligatory candlelight vigils. Just like the recent attention and extensive coverage of the Sandy Hook tragedy, the record number of murders in Black communities of Chicago and other urban cities should warrant the same media attention and concern.  The number of murders in Chicago is predicted to surpass 2012 with 12 homicides already reported this year.

Why is the discussion of Black on Black crime almost nonexistent even in our own community?

How should the issue of violence in our communities across the country be addressed?

The White House has admitted that a ban on these weapons will be exceedingly difficult to pass muster in Congress. Vice president Biden has focused publicly on universal background checks for gun purchases and the need for more federal research on gun violence.

Do you think an assault weapons ban will be passed this year?
