What Can We Do?

Gridlock continues to be the name of the game in Washington. What have our elected officials done for us lately? Democrats and Republicans have both failed the American people. Is it partisan gridlock or incompetence bordering on malfeasance? The end result is the same.

The real question is how long will we allow our elected officials to operate in their  Congressional Bubble that affords them government backed health care, financial security and a lifetime pension while many working Americans are struggling without a safety net trying not to go over their own fiscal cliffs?

How do we pop the Congressional Bubble and clean up this mess in 2013?

The recent mass shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut and the mall in Oregon have renewed the national debate over gun control. The United States has the highest rate of gun ownership in the world, with 88.8 guns per 100 people.

  • The Supreme Court has agreed to consider challenges to same sex marriage on two fronts next year. The first questions the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act, testing whether the federal government can deny federal benefits to legally married same-sex couples--- benefits automatically granted to heterosexual couples. The court will also hear challenges to Proposition 8, the ballot measure approved by California's voters in 2008 that defined marriage as between a man and a woman, overturning a state high-court ruling earlier that year that had permitted gays and lesbians to wed.

Decision Time

The Supreme Court has agreed to consider challenges to same sex marriage on two fronts next year.

Regardless of your opinions of same sex marriage, do you think benefits should be denied to legally married couples? Should a state proposition overturn a court ruling? How do you think the Supreme Court will rule?

  • A Florida gun collector has pleaded not guilty and is considering invoking Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” law to a murder charge alleging that he opened fire on a car full of unarmed teenagers, killing 17 year old Jordan Davis, in an altercation that police say stemmed from loud music. The fact that the shooter drove off after the shooting has been labeled as "unconscionable" by Jordan’s mother. The shooter, 45 year old Michael Dunn was reportedly arrested a day later 173 miles away from the shooting. His lawyer stated that Dunn felt “threatened” by the kids who were blasting loud music, blaming his fear on the lyrics of the music.
  •  Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher committed suicide in front of the team's coach and general manager at the training facility Saturday after killing his girlfriend in a separate shooting.
