Nina Simone

Singer, songwriter, musician, pianist and civil rights activist – born Eunice Kathleen Waymon, took an early interest in music learning to play the piano at age 4 and studied at the prestigious Julliard School of Music.By the 1950’s, Simone became known as the voice of the civil rights movement. She wrote “Mississippi Goddamn”after the assassination of Medgar Evers and penned “The King is Dead” after the death of Dr. Martin Luther King,Jr. She will forever be known for her activism as well as her signature anthem, “Young Gifted and Black”

Grover Washington,Jr.

Regarded as one of the revolutionaries in jazz music, Grover Washington, Jr. was and is considered one of the greatest saxophone players in modern jazz history and has been considered by many to be the founding father of smooth jazz and a master of the jazz-funk genre. Washington’s most memorable hits, include his anthem "Mr. Magic", "The Best is Yet to Come" and "Soulful Strut." Grover Washington Jr.'s  legacy lives on in the futures of up-and-coming jazz artists, and his life is celebrated from college campuses all around the nation as well as his adopted hometown of Philadelphia.

Shirley Caesar

Shirley Caesar, the “First Lady of Gospel” has released over 40 albums and participated in sixteen collaborations and three gospel musicals in a career that has spanned six decades.  Her numerous awards include eleven Grammy Awards, thirteen Stellar Awards, an NAACP Achievement Award and induction into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame. Ms. Caesar continues to serve as co pastor of Mount Calvary Word of Faith Church in Raleigh NC with husband Bishop Harold Williams.

 Tanya Free and Friends Radio honors the contributions and career and of Evangelist Shirley Caesar.

Gil Scott-Heron

Gil Scott-Heron – composer, muscian, poet and author was known for his outspoken lyrics and poetry of the social and politcal realities of the times. Tackling issues like apartheid and nuclear arms, Gil Scott-Heron took a bold stance against injustice and inequality with edgy songs like “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised.”

Gil Scott-Heron - influential musican and poet passed away on May 27th, 2011 at the age of 62.
