Tax Cuts

Tensions are mounting between the Democrats and Republicans over the Bush tax cuts

How do you feel about allowing the Bush tax cuts to expire at the end of the year, and will raising taxes on the rich slow down the economy even more as some have suggested?

Politics of Fear

There has been a subtle shift in the conservatives’ “Politics of No” back to the “Politics of Fear” evident during the Bush administration after the 9/11 attacks that led us  into the Iraqi war searching for those elusive and subsequent non-existent weapons of mass destruction.

Sure, there is the ever present fear of Iran and Korea and nuclear proliferation, but this new era of the “Politics of Fear” seems a whole lot more personal and mean spirited. The new fears of illegal immigrants taking our jobs and having “anchor” babies to drain our federal resources from hardworking Americans is only the tip of the iceberg. Let’s add the fear of Muslims, Gays and Liberals and yes, fear of this Black President. Why it is that almost two years after the election, there are those who spend every waking hour to not only question the birthright of immigrants, but the citizenship of the President of the United States?

Armed militias and tea baggers insist that there is a socialist agenda, and that our democracy as we know it is in jeopardy while the level of hate speech is at an all time fever pitch. We must realize that fear is only a distraction from the issues at hand. Many hardworking Americans of all colors and faiths have real fears of job security and meeting the basic needs of their families that need to take precedence over trumped up fears designed to control the upcoming midterm political landscape.

"The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” Or is it?

What’s Right?

Recent comments by President Obama defending and then somewhat retracting his support of a proposed Islamic Center and Mosque in New York has drawn the ire of critics from both the right and left.

How do you feel about the prolonged controversy surrounding the center?

Peace and Harmony

There appears to be a trend in our society toward a lack of respect, human decency, peace and harmony.  We seem to have become so causal that we have lost any semblance of respect and regard in the way we treat each other. The sensationalism of the recent altercation between a flight attendant and passenger that resulted in the attendant verbally abusing the passengers and exiting the flight via the emergency chute with beer in hand is the latest example of how we make heroes and celebrities out of those who revel in antisocial behaviors.

While many in the media and others seem to be amused by the flight attendant’s flippant attitude and behavior, thankfully this incident didn’t result in the loss of lives, unlike the recent situation in Connecticut involving a disgruntled employee that went on a shooting rampage that did result in the loss of lives including his own.

Let’s not allow rude and outrageous behavior to become the norm in our society.

It's a Victory

The highly publicized and debated proposed Cultural Center and Mosque near the site of the 9/11 attacks was approved unanimously by the New York City Landmarks Commission, despite critics including national right wing political figures Gingrich and Palin, who feel that the center would be a betrayal of the victims of the attacks. Donna Marsh O’Connor, spokesperson for the September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows, founded by family of those killed in the attacks, praised the decision stating, “We believe, too, that this building will serve as an emblem for the rest of the world that Americans stand against violence, intolerance and overt acts of racism and that we recognize that the evil acts of a few must never damn the innocent.”

The September 11 attacks were an assault on every American and brought about an albeit brief, national sense of unity and solidarity regardless of race or religious preference. How can we in good conscience justify the vilification of all Muslim Americans for the acts of nineteen radical terrorist extremists?

New York Mayor Bloomberg said it best, "It is my hope that the mosque will help to bring our city even closer together and help repudiate the false and repugnant idea that the attacks of 9/11 were in any way consistent with Islam."

Let's Talk

In less than a fraction of the time spent covering Mel Gibson, Lindsay Lohan and the Tiger Woods drama, the media seems to have already moved on, past the Shirley Sherrod story and the racial tension that appears to be on the rise in this country. Take note, it’s all too easy to just sit back and wait for another incident to occur that the media deems newsworthy. Surely nothing will change if we continue this reactionary cycle and fail to address the issue beyond the short lived spotlight of the media.

Ms. Sherrod’s story revealed that despite the pains of past prejudices and injustices, reconciliation and harmony are achievable through understanding and dialogue. Ms. Sherrod made a conscious decision to put aside her initial misgivings and worked diligently to save the farm of the Spooners. Mr. and Mrs. Spooner, likewise many years later, did the right thing as well by choosing to enter the spotlight to defend the character and speak out on behalf of Ms. Sherrod when she was unfairly forced out of her job with the USDA. I believe that the relationship between Ms. Sherrod and the Spooners is more reflective of the real America than not.

I wonder, what would happen if the NAACP, in an effort to forge a relationship, were to actually sit down with the Tea Party for an honest, open and civil discussion? In this era of reality TV, this would be a meeting worth televising during primetime.

It is time for us all to reach across racial, economic and political lines, and to start talking to each other - instead of about each other. Nothing happens until someone does something.
