Take a Stand

I would like to thank Fox News and Andrew Breitbart for introducing us to the remarkable Ms. Shirley Sherrod .What was intended to be a racial firebomb quickly turned into a dud while revealing the true colors of those that are quick to spread misinformation and malicious innuendo.

Giving credit where credit is due, I would like to sincerely thank CNN for giving Ms. Sherrod a platform to unveil the whole story, not an edited distortion of the facts. A  21st century Rosa Parks, Ms. Sherrod stood firm without wavering or backing down from  Breitbart, Fox News, the NAACP and the White House. WOW!

Let’s face it, racial tension is on the rise in America. This is not the first time and chances are not the last time that the right wing media and extremists will choose to fan the flames of racial discord. This was certainly a teachable moment and it is my sincere hope that the lessons learned will lead us to a legitimate, open and honest discussion of race relations.

We should all, regardless of race or political affiliation, emulate the courageous and steadfast nature of Shirley Sherrod and come out of the shadows to take a stand for justice and equality for all.

No More ...?

Virginia Democratic Senator Webb has called for an end to affirmative action diversity programs suggesting that these programs have marginalized and disadvantaged struggling whites.

How do you feel about the need for continued affirmative action programs in America?

Don't Fall for the Hype!

Last week’s NAACP resolution demanding the repudiation of the racist elements of the Tea Party has caused not only a media frenzy , but sparked disagreement and debate among many in the community as to whether this fringe subset of the Republican Party is even worthy of the attention of the nation’s preeminent advocacy organization. While the merits of the resolution can be debated, the highly documented presence of bigotry and racism within the Tea Party is not even worthy of debate despite the denials from Republican and former House Majority Leader Dick Armey and other Tea Party leaders.

While the media drew attention to this one somewhat controversial resolution, the NAACP passed 75 resolutions ranging from education, immigration and jobs to fixing our broken criminal justice system that have failed to receive the attention and in some cases even a mention in the mainstream news media outlets.

Let’s not get distracted by the hype.

Losing Hope?

According to a recent poll, only 45% of voters approve of the President’s performance.
Do you think President Obama has been effective as a leader and will the midterm elections be a referendum on the President?

Deserved and Earned

It is a shame before Almighty God how many of our brave military men and women have been treated after risking life and limb for their country – the United States of America.  Without question, every branch of our military deserves our utmost honor and respect. While our elected officials are quick to publicly salute and applaud our military, the true appreciation deserved is a far cry from reality.

Troubling reports have surfaced recently indicating as many as 1800 Veterans may have been exposed to HIV and Hepatitis at a Veterans Affairs hospital in Missouri due to improper protocols involving the cleaning of dental instruments. It’s a mishap similar to an incident in a Miami VA hospital where approximately 2400 veterans may have been exposed to infectious diseases as the result of improperly cleaned endoscopy equipment. Did we not learn anything from the scandal of neglect and disgrace at Walter Reed Army Medical Center?

Our veterans have earned and deserve lifelong entitlements including access to the best healthcare, support services and retirement benefits available equal to our elected politicians that sit on the Hill discussing war strategy. What’s wrong with this picture?

It is appalling that many of our veterans across this great country have been reduced to panhandling and living on the streets. I challenge you to find any former congressional leaders that are homeless, living under bridges holding signs begging for change.

What will it take for Congress to finally enact meaningful reform in our VA system?

Win or Lose?

RNC Chairman Michael Steele has taken a lot of heat for suggesting that the war in Afghanistan cannot be won.

Do you agree with his contention? How would you define success in Afghanistan?

Fair and Balanced

There appears to be a growing number of political pundits that are of the opinion that President Obama is not fit to be President of the United States. Without shame, the critics have been outright malicious and disrespectful toward this President. The JOES’s have been coming out of the woodwork, with apologies from Joe Wilson with his infamous “You Lie” and Joe Barton with his accusation of an Obama “shakedown” of BP.

Could you imagine the media firestorm that would have erupted if then Senator Obama had publicly admonished George Bush before a joint session of Congress because of his disapproval of the Iraq war? Somehow I think that an apology would not have sufficed and all would not have been forgiven and forgotten.

In fairness, it’s sometimes difficult to determine if fellow Democrats are friend or foe.  It’s amazing that a party in the majority can’t seem to unify with constant infighting between splinter groups consisting of progressives, liberals, and blue dogs.

Despite lukewarm support from his own party in conjunction with the Republican Party of NO, President Obama deserves credit for his leadership and guidance through one of the most difficult economic times in this nation. This administration has tackled Wall Street, health care reform and expanded hate crime legislation just to name a few, all while winding down the Iraq war and managing an offensive front in Afghanistan and overseeing the largest of oil spills in history.

I believe that our current state of divisiveness is due in part to the distortion of the facts by the right wing media outlets. Since there are those that are hell bent on wanting the President to fail and the media’s lack of any semblance of “fair and balanced” reporting – it has become long overdue for those of us that can discern fact from fiction to support this President.

If we are not willing to get behind him and this administration, I say we don’t deserve this President – President Barack Obama.
