Unshakable?

The situation on the Korean peninsula has reportedly escalated to the brink of war. President Obama has stated that US support for South Korea is unshakable.

Should the State Department’s pledge of a “measured and unified response” include US military engagement in Korea?

Be Thankful ...

Thanksgiving - it’s a day off from the hustle and bustle and all that’s going on in the world. It’s a big Family and Friends day that will have many traveling near and far to be with loved ones and to eat like it’s the last supper. But before we pass the turkey along with all the fixings, let’s all take a moment to reflect on the original intent for this day and give thanks.

Since 1621 when the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians shared an autumn harvest feast as a symbol of cooperation, the pilgrims gave thanks to God for a successful bounty of crops. Likewise, we all have something to be thankful for whether the bounty is plentiful or sparse.

Revive that spirit of cooperation and gratitude by being a blessing to someone else. Help someone that is less fortunate and can’t afford a turkey and all the fixings. Visit, call or invite someone to dinner that may otherwise be alone or less fortunate.

With a heart of gratitude and like the words of a familiar tune, “…be thankful for what you got.”

Up Close and Personal

Airline passengers have become increasingly frustrated and in some cases have refused the new full body scans and enhanced pat downs due to privacy and health concerns.

How do you feel about the use of body scanners versus pat downs in airports and do you feel more secure with these procedures in place?

Letter to the President

November 15, 2010

President Barack Obama
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue
Washington, DC 20500

Greetings President Obama,

I was fired up in 2008 with great anticipation that you would be steadfast without wavering in bringing about the change that we, the American people, elected you into office to execute. Given the mound of problems inherited from the previous administration, I want to thank you for an outstanding job of rescuing our country from a full blown depression. Without any help from the Party of NO, you have accomplished a great deal Mr. President. I commend you for the passing of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, the passing of health care reform, financial reform and a host of other significant bills signed into law along with the appointments of two female justices to the Supreme Court. There is still much to be done starting with job creation, which I believe should take precedence along with the extension of Emergency Unemployment Compensation, considering the approximately 15 million unemployed Americans.

Mr. President, from day one in office, you have attempted to extend an olive branch to the Republican Party – but to no avail. The Republicans have stood firm in their mission of being the party of NO for the past two years. I subscribe to the notion of bipartisanship, but not when it is detrimental to your goals and the welfare of the American people. I believe it is time to move on for the sake of the American people and the country.

The next two years are going to be just as difficult, in light of the results of the mid-term elections. With all due respect Mr. President, you are going to have to put on your political boxing gloves and fight for the American people. I honestly believe that the American people will stand firm with you and support you if you have to throw a political punch or two in what is sure to be a high stakes championship match. We cannot afford to allow the Republicans to take this country backwards.

There are those in the GOP whose stated mission is to make you a one term president. Whether or not you elect to run again, please stand strong with the American people and make history again! Let it be said that you were not only the First African American President, but an African American President whose legacy was truly one of positive change and extraordinary leadership.

Godspeed Mr. President.

Fired Up!

Time is Running Out

Federal Emergency Unemployment Compensation benefits are scheduled to expire November 30th, which can provide up to a total of 53 weeks of benefits for qualified individuals.

How do you feel about the need for Congress to extend these benefits to the millions of unemployed workers?

LET'S GET READY TO RUMBLE!

From day one in office, President Obama’s efforts to work with Republicans have proven futile. Now that the Republicans have gained control of the House, the President has once again gone out of his way to extend an olive branch. Predictably, the Republicans have responded with a crystal clear message that civility and compromise are not on their agenda. Senate Minority GOP Leader Mitch McConnell has thrown the first punch with a blatant outright attack stating that the GOP's mission is to make sure that President Obama is a one term president. They will succeed if the President continues to be fainthearted. The midterm election is evidence that the ‘bend over backwards’ compromise approach doesn’t work, and in fact has only played to the advantage of the President’s critics and detractors.

The President is behind in points and can’t afford to lose any more rounds if he wants to secure the much needed support of the American people and his legacy. The President is going to have to STAND UP to the GOP without backing down, contrary to those that think he might come across as an angry black man if he takes a FIRM stand. Really! So be it, if it means fighting to create jobs to put the vast majority of Americans back to work, restore the housing market to one of trust and integrity, and eliminate don’t ask, don’t tell and all of the other issues that we elected him to address on our behalf.

President Obama needs to know that we won’t stigmatize or stereotype him for any political punches he throws on our behalf. For the next two years, starting now, he has to stand up and fight, and we MUST stand strong with him. Join me by sending the President a message that we want him to put on his political boxing gloves and continue his fight for the American people. The Right has been loud and extreme. We have to be louder with the - Truth.

No Shows

Republicans brought home major victories in the 2010 midterm elections. Exit polling revealed low Democratic turnout, especially among young voters that supported the President in 2008.

What do you think was the cause of the low turnout and what message do you think voters are sending to Washington?

Presidential Remarks on 2010 Midterm Elections

The Good Life

Have you ever once been sitting in a restaurant where they pull out your chair and the hostess places a napkin in your lap and several servers are assigned to your every need? Dining with great company in a festive atmosphere is definitely an example of living the good life. But just imagine that while you are wining and dining you just happen to get a glance of an individual digging through trash for their next meal. Surely this real life image would spoil even the most festive occasion.

Unfortunately, this very real scenario reflects the economic divide in this country between Wall Street and Main Street. Surely, Wall Street is still wining and dining, despite the economic turmoil that has snatched the certainty and foreseeable opportunity of the good life from those of us on Main Street. The good life for many of us on Main Street has been relegated to a matter of survival. Census Bureau reports reveal poverty rates in 2009 to be the highest since 1994.

While Wall Street and political leaders are partaking of the good life, it’s high time for us on Main Street to come to terms with holding our government responsible and accountable so that we can all have the opportunity to live the good life. It seems as though constructive criticism too often has been replaced by propaganda, innuendo and in some cases, outright lies. In the midst of our anger and frustration, it appears as though we have barricaded ourselves in our various political parties of preference. It seems as if we have lost touch with the fact that we are all in the – SAME small boat – weathering the – SAME storms of unemployment, foreclosures, health care and access to a quality education. Case in point, several rallies were recently held at the Lincoln Memorial involving opposing groups attended by thousands of us from Main Street America who share many of the SAME issues and concerns.

It should go without saying that “Together We Stand, or Divided We Fall.”

Back to Work

The issue of jobs is of great concern, especially to the approximately 15 million unemployed Americans. The ratio of the unemployed seeking work to jobs available is roughly 5 to 1.

What do you think needs to happen to put the vast majority of these Americans back to work?
